Public Disclosure of Student Disciplinary Proceedings
During the Spring 2002 semester, Georgetown University’s Disciplinary Review Committee (DRC), charged by the Vice President for Student Affairs, reviewed the policy regarding disclosure of the outcomes of student disciplinary proceedings. In order to heighten awareness among all members of the community about Georgetown’s disciplinary system, the DRC--in consultation with students, faculty and staff--decided to publish periodically information regarding violations of the University's Code of Student Conduct and the types of sanctions that were imposed as a result of those violations. The information, which is detailed on this site, includes violations and sanctions for students living on- and off-campus.
Below is a description of the purpose of the student disciplinary system as outlined by the Code of Student Conduct:
Statement of Purpose
The student discipline system exists to handle infractions against University rules and regulations. This system is based on a philosophy of fairness for all parties affected by any situation involving a student’s non-compliance with a University policy or regulation. When a student disregards these principles, he or she is held accountable and sanctions are imposed.
Goals of Sanctions
• Mechanism within which offenders can reflect upon their actions and their impact on both themselves and others.
• Reestablishment of order while considering the common good, which sometimes necessitates the temporary or permanent removal of the offender.
• Restoration of the offender to good standing within the community, provided the safety of the community is not jeopardized by the individual’s presence or return.
• Restitution to those harmed by the offender’s actions to the degree possible.
The student discipline system is designed to be an educational system and does not function as a court of law. Therefore, procedural issues, including the introduction and consideration of evidence, are handled in a manner consistent with that educational focus. Where the allegations are more serious, and therefore the consequences more serious, the rules of procedure are structured appropriately. The student discipline system is not a substitute for the criminal and civil courts but, an additional option for Complainants when the alleged violator is an enrolled Georgetown University student.
