A No Contact Order (NCO) is a directive requiring a student to refrain from any form of contact with, and not approach, a specified individual, whether directly or indirectly. NCOs are implemented as supportive measures to protect and support any student, faculty, staff member, or other individual, as well as the broader University community. It is important to note that NCOs are not findings of wrongdoing or sanctions resulting from a student disciplinary matter.
The Office of Student Conduct is responsible for issuing and enforcing adherence to No Contact Orders. In certain situations, the Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) may also issue a No Contact Order; however, in all cases, the enforcement and oversight of NCOs will remain with the Office of Student Conduct.
A “No Contact Order” is a directive prohibiting a student from having any form of contact with, or approaching, a specified individual. This includes both physical and non-physical contact, whether direct or indirect. Prohibited forms of contact encompass, but are not limited to:
Phone calls or text messages
Mail or email
Faxes or written notes
Social media or other electronic communications
Contact through third parties, regardless of their awareness of the order
The NCO also requires that the individual maintain physical distance from the other party, even if no direct interaction occurs. If both parties are in the same location, they must go about their activities without causing a disruption. A minimum distance of 10 feet (3 meters) is required between the parties at all times.
Unless otherwise specified by the Office of Student Conduct, the terms of a No Contact Order will remain in effect indefinitely, up until the graduation of each party involved.
If you believe that your No Contact Order has been violated, promptly contact the Office of Student Conduct at studentconduct@georgetown.edu and provide any relevant information or records regarding the alleged violation. Non-compliance with a No Contact Order constitutes a violation of the Code of Student Conduct and may lead to sanctions, ranging from Disciplinary Probation to Disciplinary Dismissal.
Students can check Canvas rosters before classes begin to see if they share any classes with the other party. While being in the same class is not prohibited, students can consult their Academic Dean to explore alternatives for adjusting their schedules.
If you and the other party are involved in the same student organizations or attending other campus events, maintain a distance of at least 10 feet and avoid any form of interaction.
When navigating relationships with mutual friends under the directives of the No Contact Order, ensure that neither party communicates directly or indirectly through friends or third parties. Simply informing a mutual friend or third party about the existence of the No Contact Order does not constitute a violation.
Although not required, you may choose to delete the other party’s contact information, such as phone numbers or email addresses, from your contacts.
