Rights & Responsibilities

As members of the Georgetown community, Students and Student Organizations are expected to know and comply with University policies and procedures. Ignorance of a University policy, procedure, rule or regulation or an applicable law is not an acceptable excuse for failing to uphold these standards. 

Rights in the Community Standards Process: 

  • To receive Notice of allegations against them and time to prepare a response;
  • To have reasonable access to the Investigative Report and evidence collected by the investigator before and during an Administrative Conference;
  • To be accompanied by a Support Person of their choosing throughout the Community Standards Process at any meeting, including, but not limited to, Educational or Administrative Conferences or Alternative Resolution;
  • To access University resources for support, including but not limited to Support Measures;
  • To have an opportunity to be heard, by sharing their perspective, responding to allegations and evidence, presenting information, and identifying relevant Witnesses;
  • To be considered not responsible for the allegations, unless a determination of responsibility is made based on a Preponderance of the Evidence;
  • To have the Community Standards Process handled in accordance with applicable privacy laws, including the FERPA; and
  • To request a review of the Outcome, when eligible, through the appeal process.

Responsibilities in the Community Standards Process

  • Knowing, understanding, and complying with the Code and all other applicable University policies and procedures;
  • Acting in good faith and engaging honestly, timely, and respectfully in the Community Standards Process, including responding to communications and attending required meetings, Educational or Administrative Conferences, or Alteration Resolution.
  • Submitting truthful, complete, and accurate information during the Community Standards Process;
  • Demonstrating ethical conduct, integrity, and accountability in social and organizational activities;
  • Completing all assigned Sanction(s) by the stated deadlines; and
  • Promoting a safe and inclusive environment and fostering a campus culture that values respect, equity, and the well-being of all community members.
